Dip into the art world—at home
Clear your overloaded, ’80s-TV-on-YouTube-watching head without venturing beyond your Mac. P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center hosts WPS1 Art Radio, a 24-hour radio station featuring a titillating mélange of artist interviews, talk shows (like the 30-minute Art and Technology), tunes (such as Armchair Traveler, an hour-long megamix of world music), historical recordings and other random audio delicacies. wps1.org
Dip into the art world—in person
One of the best ongoing offerings in the city is the New Silent Series, a collection of exhibits and events about art and technology, held primarily in the New Museum’s downstairs auditorium. Expand your perspective with intellectually rigorous events addressing global concerns (a panel on the issues surrounding transgenics and cloning), or pick and choose among the more lighthearted material (eye-popping videos by collective Paper Rad). 235 Bowery at Prince St (212-219-1222, ). $8, members $6.
Get them fingers dirty
If you want to become intimate with your art (and don’t scare at the course title “Monotype Intensive”), hone your printmaking abilities—and clear your mind of everything else—in a concentrated workshop at Manhattan Graphics Center. The place hosts classes designed for both beginners and more experienced artists. The crash classes (“Monotype,” for example, is six hours a day for two consecutive Sundays) teach the use of a wide variety of materials, including brushes, rollers and stencils. 481 Washington St between Canal and Spring Sts (212-219-8783, manhattangraphicscenter.org). $215–$500, visit website for class schedules and descriptions.—TJC
