THE SCENE
Stiletto at the Maritime Cabanas
363 W 16th St at Ninth Ave (myspace.com/stilettoevent). Every Sunday through summer 2–10pm, no cover. R.S.V.P. for brunch to maggie@maggiecevents.com.
THE VIBE
True to its name, this weekly brunch attracts quite the fashionable crowd. Though the party is often sprinkled with trendily dressed models, photographers and localites (that’s “lesbian socialites” for you straights), the vibe is still that of a friendly beach bar. Promoter Maggie Collier started the event in order to bring L.A.’s bumpin’ outdoor gay scene to NYC. Mission accomplished, as this is exactly the kind of shindig at which you’d expect to see the cast of The L Word carousing. “It’s less intimidating than walking into a dimly lit bar,” says Collier. “You can bring your friends, have brunch and not look like you’re cruising for women.” But as the sun sets, watch out—the music switches from mellow to mad, and go-go dancers in itsy-bitsy bikinis start doling out lap dances.—Lauren Levinson
WHO YOU'LL MEET
Thy, 34, family business, Soho
“I like bitches, and I’m looking for sex, sex, sex. The biggest turnoff is when I’m having sex and she asks me what I like—you shouldn’t ask, you should just do it! The best turn-on is when a woman tells me that she’s vain—I like a woman who’s into herself.”
Want to date Thy? E-mail thyp@tonypersonals.com.
Mickey, 27; dancer and mother of two; Crown Heights, Brooklyn
“I don’t do private dances unless I’m in a relationship. And I don’t look for people; people find me. Win me over with a romantic date, such as riding around Central Park in a horse and carriage.”
Want to date Mickey? E-mail mickeyo@tonypersonals.com.
Bella, 32; photographer, musician and graphic T-shirt designer; South Bronx
“Hell yeah, I want a summer fling! Normally I don’t put myself out there, but I just got out of a relationship. My type is assertive and easygoing. And having a great smile and good teeth never hurts!”
Want to date Bella? E-mail bellar@tonypersonals.com.
Lydia, 33; hairdresser; Williamsburg, Brooklyn
“People definitely pick me up while I’m doing their hair; it’s not a bad tactic if you’re polite, charming and share my love of house music. I’m looking for a person who has a swagger and an aura—one that makes you feel good.”
Want to date Lydia? E-mail lydiar@tonypersonals.com.
Michelle, 34, advertising, West Village
“My perfect date includes a bike ride in Central Park. Then we’d go home and shower together. I go for a feminine, heel-wearing type, who can also get dirty. And once she does, like I said, she’ll shower with me; smelling good is important!”
Want to date Michelle? E-mail michellem2@tonypersonals.com.Stiletto
Nina, 32, consultant, Soho
“I don’t need a pickup line, I have a British accent! I prefer New York girls to London girls. I find the women to be beautiful and cosmopolitan. And the lesbian community is more visible and diverse here. I’ve met gay women from all over the world in this city—it truly is a melting pot.”
Want to date Nina? E-mail ninaf@tonypersonals.com.
Vala, 24, model and event producer, Harlem
“I’m looking for someone who is quick and fast; she has to be able to keep up with me. I’m always going to events for the gay community and to Fashion Week parties. Basically, she has to feel comfortable working a room on her own. The biggest turnoff is bad fashion sense. I have a very visual eye, so if a woman is a 7, but she has sick style, then it bumps her up!”
Want to date Vala? E-mail valad@tonypersonals.com.
Karen, 46; marketing director; Sayville, L.I.
“I want a woman who is down-to-earth, loyal, honest, caring and sweet. It’s been hard to find that person, and the older you get, the more difficult it becomes. But if I met the perfect woman, my ideal summer date would be a day trip to Mohawk Mountain. We could get to know each other while walking around a beautiful atmosphere.”
Want to date Karen? E-mail karenm@tonypersonals.com.
Juliana, 25, city worker, Staten Island
“I don’t like telling people that I’m a cop—I want people to get to know me before they know what I do, because of all the stereotypes. The uniform is like a costume I have to wear, but it’s not necessarily who I am. I love being athletic and anything to do with sports, but my type is sport-femme.”
Want to date Juliana? E-mail julianae@tonypersonals.com.
Sabrina, 31; event planner and photographer; Crown Heights, Brooklyn
“People think I’m a player because I’m flirtatious, but I really relate to that song, ‘I’m not a playa, I just crush a lot.’ I’m actually an honest, sincere person. And I’m like a Don Juan—I treat women really well.”
Want to date Sabrina? E-mail sabrinah@tonypersonals.com.
Lee, 25, carpenter and barback, Chelsea
“I’m looking for a mixed Hispanic woman between the ages of 21 and 30 who has a nice smile, nice eyes and a nice ass. Smokers need not apply—it’s nasty. Date me because I’m open-minded and always up for new things.”
Want to date Lee? E-mail leea@tonypersonals.com.
