“Just add water” does not a recipe make. Thankfully, the stove-top-impaired can find solace in Sunday Suppers, the dinner party/cooking class hybrid from photographer and culinary enthusiast Karen Mordechai. Unlike underground affairs that keep diners out of the kitchen, Mordechai has created a hands-on night out. A couple times a month, guests gather at her airy Brooklyn loft; a recent themed class (“Market Fresh: Sweet and Savory”) found students whipping up seasonal dishes such as swordfish and salmon kebabs, watermelon-feta-and-basil salad, and sorbet in a berry consommé, all under the supervision of chefs Casey Solomon and Aran Goyoaga. Each guest tackles a different job, cubing watermelon, straining berries or marinating fish. The unique charm of the resulting meal is in the details: custom-designed menus, elaborate floral arrangements and enticing parting gifts, such as homemade preserves, plus a stack of recipe cards for the next time the urge strikes to tie one on (an apron, that is). Upcoming dinners include a Fall Harvest supper on Sun 15 and a Winter Dinner on Dec 6. To make reservations, e-mail info@sunday-suppers.com or visit sunday-suppers.blogspot.com. $85 and up.
Yes! I went to one of these a little while back—I found them through their beautiful blog. My boyfriend and I had such a wonderful experience learning and eating! We can’t wait to do another.
