Topped with brightly flavored extras like white cabbage in vinaigrette and Moroccan beet salad, these mild, crisp chickpea patties are easy on the palate—and don’t feel like a rock in your stomach later ($3.95). 2 W 14th St between Fifth and Sixth Aves (212-627-7877, pitajoe.com)
Maoz
An all-you-can-stuff-in-your-pita fixings bar offering roasted cauliflower, sun-dried tomatoes, pickled baby eggplant and more (plus tahini, garlic or yogurt sauces) makes this chain about more than just its powerfully spiced spheres ($4.95). Baraca
Formerly Olympic Pita, Baraca slings the same tasty falafel wrapped in thick, fresh-baked laffa bread. The price ($7.50) is justified by an unlimited salad bar (to dress your sandwich with or to eat on the side), plus gratis fries on top. 58 W 38th St between Fifth and Sixth Aves (212-869-7482)
Mamoun’s
No fancy toppings here: Moist, perfectly seasoned fritters don’t need more than cool tomato, lettuce and onion, milky tahini and a squirt of hot sauce. Best part? Chickpea
The sacrilegious premise (baked, not fried) lets these smooth, grease-free orbs showcase the natural nuttiness of the star legume ($5.45). Various locations throughout the city; visit getchickpea.com.—Billie Cohen

How is it possible that this list omits Oasis?! It's right next to the Bedford stop in Williamsburg and their falafel is as delicious as it is cheap (three dollars).
Babaghanouge on church st. between chambers and reade has the best falafel pita I've ever had in newyork. It's only $4 and you can add a side of hummus or babaghanouge for a $1.79.
46th Street near 6th Avenue corner is a very good reliable fallafel cart. It's been there for years....always good. Always cheap.
Tahini, on 9th Street and 3rd Ave, makes the best falafel in the neighborhood. The falafel is crunchy on the outside but not overcooked on the inside, and the pita is not only soft and delicious, but is also cut at an angle like a flap so that nothing falls out. Good extras too, like pickles and eggplant, which aren't available at many places. 10% student discount.
You forgot URBAN PITA, formerly named Ashkara. It's on Houston St near Katz's deli. It's somewhere around $5 for a falafel and has the real Israeli salad bar so you can add toppings free. This is the best falafel I've had so far in America. urbanpita.com
