When even a traditionalist burger-war contender like Black Iron Burger Shop sells its "Iron Horse" special for $10 a pop (not including sides), something crucial has been lost. Burgers are supposed to be cheap, people. Enter Astoria's Petey's Burger (30-17 30th Ave at 31st St, Astoria, Queens; 718-267-6300; peteysburger.com), easily NYC's best burger value. Stepping into the gleaming space shortly after its November opening, I immediately recognized the bright-red interior; someone has been studying In-N-Out carefully. But the serious pleasures were yet to come. Beautifully gooey double cheeseburgers beguiled me on multiple visits. Crisp fries were perfectly salted with a scary consistency. Counter girl Brandi—yes, we're on a first-name basis—smiled when I ordered a strawberry-and-chocolate milk shake (an In-N-Out favorite), not on the menu, happily accommodating me. The damage for all that nostalgia-inducing goodness: $10.07. It's been more than a dozen trips now, dragging friends and skeptics. None are displeased. Why make a trip to an outer borough (even if Petey's is conveniently located directly below the 30th Street elevated track)? After serious thought, I realized an essential truth. When I fantasize about burgers, it's about something much simpler than fat-to-lean percentages or brioche buns. I know too much about Ronald McDonald's evil ways not to hate that clown. But he planted a seed that still grows.—Joshua Rothkopf

LOVED PETEY'S... but the reviewer has the price wrong! Was quite disappointed when I got there and found this out- I knew the price was too good to be true! The $10.07 price is the the double cheese burger combo which includes fries (enormous) and only a SODA. The food was delicious, but I thought $10.07 for a double cheese burger combo was a bit on the expensive side for fast food, definitely not a cheap eat by my standards.
So I did some research just to see if Petey's really was expensive for NYC burgers, or if it was just my imagination. Turns out it is one of the cheaper burgers in the city, for its quality. McDonald's was not included, yucky! Petey's Cheeseburger - $3.99 Fries - $2.79 Shake Shack Cheeseburger - $4.25 Fries - $2.75 goodburger Cheeseburger - $6.75 Fries - $2.45 Better Burger Cheeseburger - $6.99 Fries - $2.75 I still think it could be $.50 to $1 cheaper as it's in Astoria and not Manhattan. But I love it! :)
Being an Astoria resident who passes Petey's every day, I was one of the many waiting for the restaurant to open. I have to admit, I was also disapointed by slightly higher than expected prices. A double combo is necessary to fill you for the price. Don't get me wrong though, the taste is great even if the patty isn't the thickest. However, the combo the reviewer talks about would run more than $13, not $10.07. Maybe $1-2 cheaper would make this place a much better option.
my girlfriend and I saw a review, saying it was similar to in and out,so we darted over right away...and before i tasted it, the smell when i walked in the door let me know that the review was correct...we just recently came back from arizona, where the first thing i do is go to in and out,and this blew it away..after talking to the owner while we were there,we found out he uses better quality meat than in and out, much more flavor...better than the original...never thought i would say that!
I am a firm believer in "You get what you pay for." Well, Petey's Burger is well priced and my double cheeseburger was more than worth its inexpensive price! Yeah, Petey you proved you can get greatness for a reasonable price! You know what? I would pay more for it because it was so delicious. The decor is fun and catchy and most important clean! I work in Manhattan and live in NJ. I happened to stumble upon it and have driven back several times! Bravo Petey's Burger!!!
Great Burgers ! I Don't know what the previous post talks about prices when a gross quarter pound burger @ at mac d's is 3.99 and Petey's Fresh Hit the Grill Cheese Burger is same price, Guess you must eat off the dollar menu. If your looking for that in n out taste with even better quality , it's at Petey's Burger for sure and the double is to die for. Culater
Petey's Burger is delicious, but I wouldn't call them cheap! I think spending $10 on a burger meal is a bit much, no matter how delicious. If they just lowered their burger and fry prices by like $1 each, $2 off the combos, I think this place's business would explode so much they wouldn't be able to beat people out of the store! As it is, every time I walk by this place on my way home from work, I see it sad and empty. I still eat here once a week, and they've got a great online delivery website
Yes, you should definitely visit! I came across this place one night by accident and fell in love with it. As a California transplant it's great to be able to grab the closest thing to an In 'n Out burger here in NYC. For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, don't worry about it, just know it's worth the trip!!!
Wow, I want to write like this. It was straight-forward and right to the point. I'm thinking about "goey double cheeseburgers..." that's what I call good imagery... Overall, I think I might visit this place...
