Wikipedia and International Cuisine in NYC
Your boss says Wikipedia isn’t a reliable source, but you’re off the clock now—embrace it. For each WICNYC meeting, founder Bill Chapman, 49, a software developer from Astoria, Queens, selects three unrelated articles from the site or other Web sources, and invites members to read and discuss them over an affordable ethnic dinner. Topics run the gamut—from terrorism to global warming to “these guys who tie balloons to a lawn chair so they can fly.” Think of this as the lazy person’s book club: “It’s perfect for people like me who love to read but never have the time,” says member Fernando Corredor. Feeling chatty? The group meets roughly every three weeks; sign up now for its Saturday 19 discussion—topics: sex ed, why humans cry and oil—at Fusia Asian Cuisine (677C Lexington Ave at 56th St, 212-308-2111). Random Events NY
What constitutes random in a city this crazy? Paintball, darts, hot-air ballooning, trapeze, belly dancing, glassblowing—anything, really. “My only criteria is that we have to be able to talk while doing it,” says club founder Will Petz, 30, who negotiates group discounts for the outings. “I joined to meet adventurous people, and I’ve made friends at every event,” says member Susan Werner, 27, adding, “I fell off the trapeze and ended up in the river, but I keep coming back.” Feeling random? Head to Johnny Utah’s (25 W 51st St between Fifth and Sixth Aves, 212-265-UTAH) on Wednesday 23 at 5:30pm to ride the mechanical bull and drink cheap swill. For more info, visit randomeventsny.com.
NYC/NJ The Bucket List
Okay, so the Jack Nicholson–Morgan Freeman movie didn’t exactly sweep the Oscars, but it did inspire 31-year-old Jayson Huang to start this group. “It made me think about all the things I want to do in my life,” he says. Like what? Skydiving, zip lining, martial arts, dance… Turns out, plenty of other nongeriatrics are also making lists of wacky stuff they too want to experience before they die. “I’ve always wanted to do these things, but I never had the motivation,” says 27-year-old member Albana Zegullaj. “This group gives me the push I need.” Feeling daring? Break out the bow and arrow for an archery lesson on Saturday 19 at 3:30pm at Queens Archery in Flushing. To sign up, visit meetup.com/nynj-thebucketlist/.—Allison Baker
