Thursday 6
Movie night
“Running for mayor against the richest man in New York City is hard work,” says Reverend Billy, who likes to relax with his supporters by watching progressive films. Tonight, catch James D. Scurlock’s documentary Maxed Out, about the credit card industry, at 8:30pm. At 6pm, join Reverend Billy under the disco ball for a BYOB happy hour. FREE Vote Reverend Billy Headquarters, 250 Lafayette St between Prince and Spring Sts (212-219-2526, voterevbilly.org). 6pm.
Friday 7
Union Square Greenmarket
Pick up dinner from Reverend Billy’s favorite Greenmarket vendor, Blue Moon Fish, before accompanying him on the crusade to get his name on the mayoral ballot. He can often be found on the north side of the park, where he petitions to keep the pavilion, which he calls a “temple of free speech,” available for public use. FREE Union Square, E 17th St and Broadway. 8am–6pm.
Saturday 8
Summer Streets Block Party
Boogie down with Reverend Billy’s 35-member Life After Shopping Gospel Choir as they take advantage of the Summer Streets program. Reverend Billy invited Mayor Bloomberg to join in—as long as he wears “a florescent bikini and combat boots,” that is. FREE Outside the Vote Reverend Billy HQ, 250 Lafayette St between Prince and Spring Sts (212-219-2526). 10am–1pm.
Sunday 9
Brook Park Picnic
This afternoon, Reverend Billy will whip up his special potato salad and host a neighborhood picnic. “We don’t have millions of dollars to spend on the campaign,” he says. “Gospel singing is how we communicate.” Bring food to share and chow down while you listen to a political sermon by the good Reverend, and hear from activist groups like Sustainable South Bronx. FREE Brook Park, corner of Brook Ave and E 141st St, Bronx (friendsofbrookpark.org). 5–8pm.
Monday 10
Whistle-Stop Tour on the A Train
Meet Reverend Billy at Port Authority for a press conference, then take the A train with the man himself. The Life After Shopping Gospel Choir provides the entertainment—expect a rendition of Frank Sinatra’s “Theme from New York, New York”—and the candidate will give a talk. Stick around for the two-hour journey, or hop off in Brooklyn and head to Laura’s Gourmet Restaurant (1235 Prospect Ave at Reeve Pl, Windsor Terrace; 718-436-3715), one of Reverend Billy’s favorite haunts. “You can tell [owner] Laura Leone what kind of day you had, and she will serve you the perfect dish.” FREE Port Authority, southwest corner of 42nd St and Eighth Ave. 1pm.
Tuesday 11
Brit Noir Festival
Treat yourself to a double feature with Marc Allégret’s 1948 film, Blanche Fury, and Arthur Lubin’s Footsteps in the Fog (1955). The Reverend likes the macrobiotic fare at Souen (210 Sixth Ave at Prince St; 212-807-7421, souen.net) after a flick. Film Forum, 209 W Houston St between Sixth Ave and Varick St (212-727-8110, filmforum.org). Times vary, through Sept 3; $12.
Wednesday 12
Sideshows by the Seashore
Reverend Billy is a “Save Coney Island” supporter, so end your week of political mayhem with a laugh at the freakish wonders and human curiosities near the beach. And don’t forget to vote. Coney Island USA, 1208 Surf Ave at 12th St, Coney Island, Brooklyn (718-372-5159). Mon–Fri 2–8pm; Sat, Sun 1–9pm; $7.50.
Awesome!
Hooray for Rev. Billy - the only person in the Mayoral race worth voting for!
Phew! What a week of events this is! How does he do it! I'll try to catch up with Rev at at least 2 of these events. Who is with me?
