Unsung Heroes
Behind the music: This half-male, half-female group was founded on the premise of performing a cappella songs “that don’t suck.”
Singing style: Rock, pop and R&B. “We want to stick to predominantly upbeat tracks that keep an audience engaged and electric,” says cofounder and bass Chris Serico.
Crowd-pleasers: Ben Folds Five’s “Underground,” Gavin DeGraw’s “Chariot” and Linkin Park’s “In the End”
Catch ’em live: April 30 at Ella Lounge (9 Ave A between 1st and 2nd Sts; 212-777-2230, unsung-heroes.com). 7:30pm.

Kelso could do a Kelso jingle... Hey Nick, how'd your video turn out btw? -J
No lie -- I had Kelso beer for the first time a couple days ago. It was some sort of reddish brew -- light and pleasant. I've got to get me a list of the places around here that have Kelso on tap.
well, damn tasty beer + fine horse breading = great acappella! http://www.kelsoofbrooklyn.com/ i hope you guys make it on the show (if you don't already know...)
Rub is cool as well as all the other great groups that performed @ Harmony Sweeps, but my love goes out to Kelso and The Red States(No Political Affiliation) because I'm in both. As for how we got in, they found us somehow. Actually Kelso is named after the racehorse, since a horse head graces the front of our HQ. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelso_(horse)
Kelso is amazing indeed! I'm also biased - I'm in Rub... How did you guys git in this article? Btw, is Kelso named after the beer?
I agree, Rub was excellent at Sweeps. Obviously I love Kelso, but I'm a little biased since I am in the band myself :) The rest of these groups are fantastic. I'm glad there's a good cross-section of the a cappella scene here, although there are literally dozens of great bands out there and they all bring something unique to the stage.
'Rub' did pretty well at the Sweeps as well... Technically speaking, they were 1st place in New York region!
I was at the Highline Ballroom in Manhattan last weekend to see the Conspiracy of Beards and they fully blew me away. So much so that I went over to Bowery Poetry Club later that night to check out their encore set, and that was even better! I think Leonard Cohen is in the top three songwriters of our generation, and the Beards really do these classic songs justice. "The Window", "Suzanne", "Manhattan", and "Don't Go Home with Your Hard-on" were my favorites. I hope they are on the show!!!
I've had the luxury of seeing The Conspiracy of Beards perform a couple of times while I was in San Francisco. When I found out they were coming to New York, I made sure to see them, and I brought along some vocally-minded friends. They are great, with complex and challenging arrangements of Leonard Cohen songs. What's not to love? Also, a very stylish look. I hope they make it onto the show!
I was at Parkside Lounge the other night to see see another show but caught the end of Treble. I've never heard an acappella group but was blown away and I asked someone there who they were. I'm glad to see them featured by TONY because i thought they were an amazing talented group. I will definitely be looking for future shows. Hey ladies- where can I catch you next?
I'm surprised that this article didn't mention Duwende. They're probably the most established NYC contemporary a cappella group these days. And they ain't your mama's a cappella either!
all this plugs about unsung heroes bothers me. i listened to the vids and they just plain bad. i mean a couple of these groups are decent but i guess their not commentin. whatever just my 2 cents
Attended Unsung Heroes concert and all I can say is: WOW! Their voices are amazing alone and in a group! Definitely go and check out their next show!
I have seen the Unsung Heroes several time before and they really kick some serious butt. I am always amazed at the difference between the crappy stuff that you hear in college an real professionals. They have one girl in the group, Samantha I think, that you will definately hear on the radio. They are an amazing group so don't miss their next show!!! They rock!!!!
I saw Treble AND the Red States at Don't Tell Mamas last summer... they were amazing!!
The NYC a cappella scene is awesome! I'm also a big fan of the MetropoliTones (www.MetropoliTones.com), an a cappella group that performs all over Manhattan...they consistently blow me away with their tight sound, high energy, and amazing stage presence! They are PHENOMENAL musicians - it's definitely worth checking them out!
Checked out Kelso and The Red States, all I have to say is JANIFER ROCKS! Girl, just for the fact both a cappella groups you're in ended up in this article just tells everyone how killer you are! Keep showing everybody how it's done!
Saw the Unsung Heroes a couple weeks ago at Don Hills after having dinner in the area. They're SICK! I've never in my life seen anything like it - such energy, such poise, and that SOUND?! I didn't know you could deconstruct a song like that and put it back together to make it better than it was before! I'm totally checking them out at Ella on the 30th!
Unsung Heroes is the best acapella has to offer. None of that college group cheesey bullshit. And Sam Cordon--the full package deal! Why hasn't someone offered this girl a contract yet???
I saw Kelso at the Harmony Sweeps also -- I hope they go on the reality show! They'd be really fun to watch. :)
Unsung Heroes = rulz! for realz!!! :-D
Yay UH! Love you guys!
Rock on, Serico!! Congrats UH!!!
Kelso, Congratulations on the article!
I love the Red States! I saw them at 169 Bar too and was totally blown away! This isn't your mother's a cappella... these guys really know how to put on a show! Even the frat guys drinking in the back of the bar were impressed.
KELSO - Best arrangement at Harmony Sweepsteaks! And who the hell can make Danity Kane bearable? These guys. Really amazing sound, taking the dorky out of a-cappella - I can't wait to hear them with a larger repertoire.
I saw the Red States at Bar 169, talk about a great show! Such a diverse group of people who really can sing!
I saw this group at Cafe Vivadi this past February for the group debut of their two newest members. Let me just say I never heard such beautiful sound coming out from just 6 people. The group is amazing with its tone, blend. Most of all the members seem to have lots of fun and enjoying singing for their crowd. This group definitely has a lot of experience. With its extremely enjoyable and groovy tunes, I strongly recommend it to everyone!
Wow, I never knew a cappella could be like that. This group Kelso is awesome!
Broadway toons make me cringe, so naturally I didn't think I would like an all female accapella group, but I must say, these women rock. Its a totally unique sound. The women are all very talented and the arrangements are ambitious and complex They manage to transform the perceived inherent dorkiness of it all into a very entertaining evening.
Just saw Treble @ Parkside Lounge last week. They were amazing - great soloists, energy and cool songs.
