Six artists have used the MetroTech Center park as inspiration for the outdoor sculptures in the Public Art Fund’s “Double Take” exhibit (Flatbush Ave at Myrtle Ave, Downtown Brooklyn; 212-980-4575; through Sept 10, free), and most of them decided to play with fantasy. Check out Johannes VanDerBeek’s Pilgrim Ghost, a man draped in an aluminium sheet who appears to be see-through but is actually a trompe l’oeil trick.
If you tire of staring at Internet cat pictures today, applaud highbrow cuteness at the “New Bears” exhibit (ClampArt, 521–531 W 25th St between Tenth and Eleventh Aves; 646-230-0020; through Dec 19, free). Jill Greenberg, who shot the much-critiqued images of a malevolent-looking John McCain leftover from an Atlantic magazine shoot, also has a vested interest in grizzlies from Canada: She photographed a series of portraits saturated with whimsical ursine personality. They’ll glare and attempt to seduce you from the walls where they’re hung. And you’ll like it. OMG! I can has teddy pix?!?—Sharon Steel
