Mark Twain wrote a letter home to Missouri in 1853, after he’d moved to New York City, confessing that he’d “taken a liking to the abominable place.” Then he threw up his hands and stayed for years. Typical! The Mark Twain’s New York walking tour (meet at the southwest corner of Broadway and Spring St, 917-620-5371; Sat, Sun 1pm; $15) visits sites in Soho and the Village where he lived and worked-—as well as the hotel where he met his future wife—and is sprinkled with Twainisms, supplied by writer Peter Salwen.
The band called the Most Powerful Telescope in the Universe spends one weekend a year in the woods writing and recording an EP from scratch; like Bon Iver, but they do it every year. The Bell House has planned a listening-party show for the outfit’s first full-length, The Moonlight’s Fair Tonight (49 7th St between Second and Third Aves, Gowanus, Brooklyn; 718-643-6510; 5pm, free). Temper the indie psych-pop with $4 beers during the 5–7pm happy hour.
