Fountain Art Fair
What’s it all about? For a single donation, you get all-weekend access to this 15-gallery event dubbed the “Anti-Art Fair.” Visit the Ad Hoc Art gallery (street art, pop Surrealism, tattoos, etc.) and the Donkey Game installation, by Gregory Haberny (of Yum Yum Factory), or learn more about Swoon’s Swimming Cities of Serenissima, a fleet of vessels built from salvaged materials. “We are a tightly knit crew of 35,” Swoon explains. “We’re all artists, musicians, crackerjack mechanics and folks who specialize in the making of big, impossible, ridiculous dreams.” The ships aren’t docked here, but Glowlab director Christina Ray has donated part of her booth to selling affordable works by Swoon to raise money for the floating art project.
What can I do besides stare at pictures? “Fountain is all about the cutting-edge artwork, but we figured we’d make use of Pier 66’s huge stage and PA system,” says Fountain director David Kestings. MC Chris will perform at the March 6 opening reception, and there will be a handful of live installations over the course of the weekend. The Swimming Cities crew is also throwing a number of benefits, including a March 14 silent art auction and dance party at Secret Project Robot in Williamsburg, Brooklyn; check swimmingcities.org for more info.
