New Year’s Evil
Bands. Booze. Bushwick. For the broke among us comes a night of live music from the New York Howl, Dirty Beauty Shoppe and Marionettes of Satan, playing their last local show before tour. With $3 PBRs, it’s the place to be for penny-pinchers on the party prowl. FREE Goodbye Blue Monday, 1087 Broadway at Dodworth St, Bushwick, Brooklyn (myspace.com/goodbyebluemondayinc"). Wed 31–Jan 1 9pm–4am.
Semi Precious Weapons’ NYE Blowout and Blood & Thunder
Public Assembly is throwing two separate NYE parties—how very antirecession of them. Glam-rock locals Semi Precious Weapons headline the front room, but if you’re aiming for rehab in 2009, check your watch at the door and head for the Blood & Thunder party in the bunker: It’s got a 24-hour liquor license. Public Assembly, 70 North 6th St between Kent and Wythe Aves, Williamsburg, Brooklyn (718-384-4586). Wed 31–Jan 1 8–4pm; $35–$70, after 2am $10; bunker $TBA.
Knitting Factory’s NYE Farewell
Love like you’ve never been hurt, dance like no one is watching and head to the Knitting Factory as if it were the last time you might ever see Deer Tick, Deerhoof, Dirty Projectors or Akron/Family live. This late show will be the Factory’s last before it takes over Luna Lounge. And hey, just for tonight, drink like you’ll never get cirrhosis. The Knitting Factory, 74 Leonard St between Broadway and Church St (knittingfactory.com). Wed 31–Jan 1 8pm–4am, $35.
Crystal Castles’ NYE Late Show
Not to be confused with their Wednesday 31 show, these chaotic Canucks are also playing a wee-early gig on January 1 at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. Location bonus: You can stop for a Red Bagel with cream cheese, avocado and pesto at New York Muffins (198 Bedford Ave at North 6th St) on your way home. Music Hall of Williamsburg, 66 North 6th St between Berry St and Kent Ave, Williamsburg, Brooklyn (718-486-5400). Jan 1 at 2am, $35.
New Year’s Eve Ball at Webster Hall
Here’s a lineup to keep your ADHD tendencies at bay: Webster Hall hosts Z100’s live New Year’s Eve broadcast, with enough acrobats and fire dancers to stage a game of Barrel of Monkeys, plus a set by Lady GaGa and a 6am breakfast buffet. Webster Hall, 125 E 11th St between Third and Fourth Aves (212-353-1600). Dec 31–Jan 1 8pm–9am; $75–$125, after 2:30am $40.
Brooklyn Salsa Party
Rumor has it your hips don’t lie. Bust Shakira-esque moves at this dinner-cum-salsa shindig. Musicians Ronnie Roc and Haileejaa accompany the booty-swinging beats of DJ On2bato, with live West African and Afro-Cuban drumming. Le Grand Dakar, 285 Grand Ave at Clifton Pl, Clinton Hill, Brooklyn (516-850-9178, brooklynsalsa.net). Dec 31–Jan 1 7pm–4am; $30–$40, after 1am $20.
The Official After Party for NYE 2009
Somebody’s been studying quantum theory, because the after-party manages to be in four places at once: China Club, Capitale, Marquee and Home & Guesthouse. The best part? Ticket stubs from 55 other club parties will get you in for free. The worst part? Guests from 55 other club parties will be heading here for free. Visit joonbug.com for more info.
Live Piano Disco
We’re already queueing for this très chic dance party featuring ’90s piano music and Brooklyn’s Grizzly Spears. FREE Tribeca Grand Hotel, 2 Sixth Ave between Walker and White Sts. Jan 1 1–6am. R.S.V.P. to events@grandlifenyc.com.
New Lost City
The Danger, known for its supersecret warehouse shindigs, is hosting a “community of decadence”—whatever that means. Don’t bother showing before 2am; the countdown celebration is already sold out. 341 Scholes St between Bogart St and Morgan Ave, Williamsburg, Brooklyn (thedanger.com, newlostcity.com). Jan 1 2am–sunrise, $30.
NYE Studio B
Grandmaster Mele Mel of the Furious Five brings the old-skool flava. Be sure to hit the patio around 7am to catch the first sunrise of 2009. Studio B, 259 Banker St between Calyer St and Meserole Ave, Greenpoint, Brooklyn (718-389-1880). Dec 31–Jan 1 8pm–10am; $30, after 5am $10.
