The rumors are true: There’ll be more than picnic baskets at this 85-acre Dumbo dream park, whose construction finally gets under way this week. Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy president Marianna Koval, the brains behind the space’s popular Movies with a View series and summer music fests (including the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival), is stoked: “We’re very excited that the first new sections of Brooklyn Bridge Park, which includes Pier 1 and the area beneath the Brooklyn Bridge, will be open in the fall of 2009. We hope to have a seasonal ice-skating rink, a café, a space for cultural performances, community boating and a new floating pool.” Also in the works: a 1.8-acre playground, sand volleyball courts and a tidal pool for protected fishies and marine life. The entire project is slated for completion by 2013, but everything’s still in the planning stages. If you’ve got an idea you simply must share (a dog run, a bike path, naked forest nymphs), visit brooklynbridgepark.org and put in your two cents.
