Six Dead Sea Scrolls Exhibited in NYC for First Time; Mother Asks, “What’s Wrong with the Other 894?”
Six of the 900 Dead Sea Scrolls are going on display at the Jewish Museum, illuminating the beliefs of Israelite Jews more than 2,000 years ago. Says curator Susan Braunstein, “Scholars find in the scrolls an extraordinary witness to the actual times when Judaism and Christianity were developing.”
Kabbalistic Motifs Found in Scrolls; Madonna “Totally Stoked”
No red bracelets, but Braunstein says that “a number of elements that became part of Kabbalistic literature can be found in the Dead Sea Scrolls.” Magic and demonology also creep their way into the scripture.
“War Rule” Predicts Epic Battle, Apocalypse, Shofar Jamboree
Included in this exhibit, “The War Rule” passage drums up visions of an apocalyptic battle at the end of days between the Sons of Light (a sectarian group) and the Sons of Darkness (probably the Romans, duh).
Ancient Hippies Wore “Far-Out” Sandals Found Near Scroll Caves
More than 30 artifacts will also be on display, including items that merchants, farmers and soldiers of ancient Israel used. Among them is a pair of sandals possibly worn while rockin’ the agrarian lifestyle.
Origin of Scrolls Sparks Intense Debate, Intellectual Mudslinging Ensues!
It is still unknown whether a single sect (possibly the Essenes) was responsible for writing the scrolls or they are the work of several Jewish groups.
To which one might add that the museum, no doubt wary of religious controversy, has misrepresented the nature of the Jerusalem theory of scroll origins now supported by many secular-minded archaeologists and historians, and that one of their two announced lectures is to be given by Lawrence Schiffman, an alleged plagiarist who teaches at NYU. Great, where is it?
