GETTING THERE Ferries leave hourly 10am–5pm at the Battery Maritime Building (10 South St at Whitehall St) on Saturday and Sunday. Catch the 11am ferry to stake out prime picnic real estate.
GETTING AROUND Bring your own bicycle or rent one from Bike and Roll on Governors Island (212-260-0400; 30 mins $5, 2hrs $10, all day $15). The one-mile esplanade is a picturesque jaunt.
CHASING WATERFALLS Glimpse Olafur Eliasson’s westernmost waterfall in all its 120-foot-high glory from this key post.
WHAT’S PLAYING Don’t miss Lawn Party founder Michael Arenella and his dapper Dreamland Orchestra; their old-timey tunes are as obscure as they come (Sat 13 at 12:45, 2:30, 4pm; Sun 14 at 2, 3:15 at 4:15pm).
HOW TO DANCE Teens in the ’20s were burnin’ up the floors with dances like the Charleston and the Peabody. Learn the moves from Roddy Caravella and Paul Grecki, instructors at the Sandra Cameron Dance Center. Beginner lessons start at noon on Saturday and 12:15pm on Sunday. If you’re too shy to groove, spectating is dandy.
WHAT TO EAT “I’ve seen vintage picnic baskets, tea services and vintage tablecloths for spreads,” says event co-organizer Sarah Liston. “Some people go all out and have vintage flasks.” (But warning: Alcohol is an island no-no. Go Prohibition!) If you’d rather skip the picnic, Lolo Manso, chef and owner of La Nacional and Socarrat in Chelsea, is cooking up fresh paella, and the Treats Truck will sell homemade baked goods (Sunday only).
AMERICAN PIE Pies will be judged in three categories at 3:30pm on Saturday: Mom’s Best, Most Original and Hobo’s Choice. “That’s where a pie is so delicious that a hobo passing by the window would steal it,” says Liston. Stick around afterward for free slices.
POP THAT CHERRY Motorheads will flock to the handsome lineup of vintage cars, including a 1925 Studebaker, 1929 DeSoto and 1931 Ford Model A roadster. Finagling a ride around the island is strongly encouraged.
DRESS THE PART The Lawn Party attracts impeccably attired vintage fashionistas, and the clothing dealers here are the real thing. Milliner Cassie MacGregor, for example, will be selling cloches and boaters, among other hats. Says MacGregor, “I have been making a flapper-style cocktail hat specifically for the jazz party.” Well, hot dog!
The Jazz Age Lawn Party takes place Sat 13 and Sun 14 10am–7pm. For more info, visit dreamlandorchestra.com/calendar.php or govisland.com.
