- Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium at the Metropolitan Museum of Art
The upholstery and carpet have seen better days, and the acoustics are unflattering to orchestras. But there are few superior spaces in the city than this exquisitely programmed hall for hearing pianists, vocalists and chamber ensembles—not least MMartists in Concert, the Met’s superb resident chamber group. 1000 Fifth Ave at 82nd St (212-570-3949) - Merkin Concert Hall
Tucked away on a quiet block just north of Lincoln Center, this recently redesigned hall presents a wide variety of offerings, including innovative new-music concerts hosted by WNYC-FM and rich programs presented by the incomparable New York Festival of Song. 129 W 67th St between Broadway and Amsterdam Ave (212-501-3330) - The Frick Collection
Few experiences in New York City can compare with taking in a lieder concert, piano recital or chamber-music performance in this stately old mansion’s elegant music room, where scores of prominent musicians have made their first local appearances. 1 E 70th St at Fifth Ave (212-288-0700) - Baryshnikov Arts Center
Hiking out to Tenth Avenue is a schlep, but when the lure is world-class talent presented absolutely free of charge in the Baryshnikov Arts Center’s generous Movado Hour series, you won’t feel bad laying out cab fare. 450 W 37th St between Ninth and Tenth Aves (646-731-3200) - Gilder Lehrman Hall at the Morgan Library & Museum
Though the Morgan Library’s opulent auditorium, which opened in 2006, has yet to achieve its full potential, it still hosts excellent offerings from the St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble, the Boston Early Music Festival and Glimmerglass Opera. 225 Madison Ave at 36th St (212-685-0008)

The Met Museum's concert hall has always been one of the city's best kept secrets. Chamber music heaven. They used to book good jazz concerts there, too - don't know why they stopped.
