Handsome Furs
Face Control (Sub Pop)
Montreal’s Wolf Parade has joined the crowded ranks of Canadian indie supergroups like Broken Social Scene and the New Pornographers, who break up their album-to-album cycle with a plethora of side projects. Dan Boeckner and Spencer Krug share vocal duties for the band, each seemingly trying to up the theremin-driven ante on song after epic song. Each has also founded a separate group dedicated to his own unique singing voice: Guitarist Boeckner, who fronts Handsome Furs, sounds like Beck trapped in a cave, while keyboardist Krug’s croon, at the fore in Sunset Rubdown, frequently cracks like an overly stimulated, deep-voiced adolescent’s.
On Face Control, Boeckner and his wife, Alexei Perry—who controls the electronic rhythms and poses for American Apparel–style press shots with Boeckner (are we making music or pimping out our wife’s dignity here?)—reaffirm that Krug is most of the brains behind Wolf Parade. That’s no surprise, since Sunset Rubdown plays superior songs—and, for that matter, Krug’s Wolf Parade work is usually fiercer. While it would be refreshing to hear well-written, high-energy Furs songs like ’80s-throwback thrasher “Thy Will Be Done” and psychedelic clap-happy “I’m Confused” interspersed with Krug’s anthems, on their own they blend together into an innocuous, synth-heavy blur…which is a shame, because the duo really does photograph well.—Colin St. John

This is the stupidest review I've read in a long time. What does posing for photos have to do with what a record sounds like. Colin St John you are a misognist asshole with no taste. This is one of the best records I've heard in a while. Fine you don't like it but just because you are sex phobic and I'm sure an ugly frog doesn't mean you need to insinuate that this woman is whore. FUCK YOU I hope you die soon.

"pimping out our wife’s dignity here" YOU'RE AN IDIOT. there is a rich history of rock and roll being sexy and stylish for one thing - and to suggest that dan has control over his wife and pimps her out is so gross and out of it. this happens to be a great record but that's beside the point here. this kind of turgid snark is just stupid and lame.
This is a great record and Dan is surely not pimping out anyone. Dan is a cool, thoughtful, smart, sensitive musician and he and Alexei, who's also incredibly talented, are just having fun doing sexy photoshoots -- wouldn't you?

while i obviously disagree with the score you've given and think you must have a tin ear to think this record "blends to together into an innocuous, synth-heavy blur", what i must protest the most to is your assertion that through sexy press shots dan is pimping out alexei's dignity. not only is this a close minded and sexist approach but it also minimizes alexei's role in the project.
