Report card
Record companies, continuing their agonizing death throes, made it nearly impossible for us to hear their biggest new releases this year—at least until they’d been safely leaked to the Interwebs. (Us, bitter? You bet!) A bunch of the perks journalists used to enjoy dried up in 2008—more importantly, so did a lot of the outlets. It would have been easy, too easy, to give in to despair. But then we stopped to think about the discs we did hear this year, not to mention the shows we caught, and we remembered what this job was really about. We might not have agreed on everything this year (Axl, Kanye—discuss!) but any year in which most of us could groove to a utopian Spanish producer, a melancholy neodisco combo or any number of retrosoul miners was a good year to have ears.

As much as I like Gabriella Cilmi's song, I'm not claiming it is THE best of the year—I listed my tracks in alphabetical order. I first heard it on the web, like so many things these days. International release dates mean less than they once did. The album comes out in the US in March I believe.
You chose Gabriella Cilmi's song "Sweet About Me" as the best of 2008. How did you hear that song and what station is playing it. I have yet to hear that song on the radio in the USA. I have been a fan of hers since I discovered her on Amazon.co.uk (Amazon.com's UK site). I preordered Lessons to be learned before before it was released and I also purchased the deluxe edition from the UK Amazon store. Gabriella does a great cover of Cry Me A River as well as a cover of a Led Zepplin song.

I'm delighted to see there are still idealists who believe MGMT, Fleet Foxes, Vampire Weekend et al. are soulful, tasteful bands that remain resolutely free from the shackles of commercialism. No contrivances there, no, not all: just pure art. That's sweet.

Looking at Elizabth Vincentelli's list of 2008's favorite records, this lady shouldn't be allowed to express any judgement on US Indie Rock. Her list is commercial, tasteless, soulless. Compared with the likes of Fleet Foxes, MGMT, Vampire Weekend, Black Kids, her list is a total joke.
