Rum Jungle; Sun 16For the first time, one of 50 Cent’s patented threats—specifically, promising to retire if his new album, Curtis, is outsold by Kanye West’s Graduation—seems about to backfire. Meanwhile, family-friendly novelty acts (Mims, Hurricane Chris) have eclipsed the 50-perfected überthug persona as the dominant force in radio rap.
Curtis just might be the Connecticut-via-Queens rapper’s best album, though. That’s not saying too much: Like Get Rich or Die Tryin’ and The Massacre,Curtis has one great song (in this case, “I Get Money”) and lots of catchy but soulless tracks about guns and sex. Still, the album offers slightly more of Curtis Jackson and slightly less 50 Cent; the bewildered businessman from the first verse of “I Get Money” and the almost-sensitive lover on “Follow My Lead” are more human than The Massacre’s killer robot.
Originally, 50 intended to call this album Before I Self Destruct; it’ll be interesting to see if being outsold by Kanye, a safe prediction, sends him plunging into madness. Hometown audiences will be the first to know: Beginning with the Hammerstein date, 50’s five-borough tour (the Fri 14 date at Illusions in Staten Island appears to be closed to the general public) touches five local venues in four nights. As he returns to the ’hood (the Queens show at Rum Jungle is not far from his old South Jamaica drug-dealing turf), perhaps the urgency of his mixtape-king days will return as well.
