Adrienne Aragon Schafer
children’s photographer (recapphotography.com)
What she does: As the program and event coordinator at the Sony Wonder Technology Lab (550 Madison Ave at 56th St; 212-833-8100, sonywondertechlab.com), she leads workshops that teach kids how to use cameras. On the side, she runs a freelance business photographing children. And as a Good Samaritan, she donates the proceeds from three months of the year to Big Brothers Big Sisters.
How she got into it: “I started working with cameras seriously in high school. I did a lot of video but started to get interested in still photography in college,” Schafer says. She graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in media production and saved enough money for a professional-level DSLR camera.
Tricks of her trade: Schafer prefers to capture kids in their natural element. “We’ll go to a park or do something fun while I discreetly watch. If they’re not forced to sit somewhere with bright lights in their face, kids are usually pretty happy and entertaining.”
Her advice for photographing kids: “Never take your finger off the shutter button. You never know when they’ll make a cute or funny face. Parents will want to remember how funny it was to see their little one taste sugar for the first time or how tiny their toes were or how it felt to get slobbery open-mouth kisses—all things I try hard to capture.”
