Q A few weeks ago, I noticed a stage attached to a bicycle, replete with dancing pole, sound system, railing and dancer. What is it?—Stephanie Yeh, Astoria, Queens
A No, Scores didn’t start delivery service. You saw PoleRiders, the portable stage and brainchild of former pedicab driver Andrew Katzander. A chance bike ride past a strip club last year provided the lightbulb moment, and Katzander went about creating this custom bike. After making its debut last year, PoleRiders now earns stares and cheers at parades and random intersections. “People throw money at us out of car windows and run screaming out of bars when they see us,” says Katzander.
Though it started merely as a fun idea, PoleRiders has become a second job for Katzander, who’s an industrial designer by day. In addition to catching regular joy rides, you can book them for special events. “I can’t be specific on rates, but I can say pole dancers don’t come cheap,” he warns. Parents can breathe easy: While their moves are risqué, the dancers—a mix of acrobats, athletes and amateurs—keep their clothes on. Wanna see PoleRiders in the flesh? Katzander’s not saying where he’ll pop up; just look for the gyrating dancer amid sonic blasts of “Cherry Pie.” For more info visit poleriders.blogspot.com.—Jason Newman
