Subject: Clay/pottery class in NYC
I’ve been trying to find some pottery/clay classes in New York. I’d really appreciate it if you can help me find some.
Thanks, Concon
Brickhouse Ceramic Art Center
This studio boasts multiple six-week summer classes ($225), while regular potters can cement their spots by becoming associates with reserved shelf space. Stop by May 30 for an open house, or fire up the family bonds with a Father’s Day workshop on June 20. 10-34 44th Dr between 10th and 11th Sts, Long Island City, Queens (718-784-4907, brickhouseny.com)
Chambers Pottery
Massive ten-week sessions ($350), starting June 15, fill the summer at this modest Tribeca studio. The owner, having studied art in Mexico, brings a worldly eye to the craft. 153 Chambers St between Greenwich and Hudson Sts (212-619-7302, chamberspottery.com)
Chelsea Ceramic Guild
Load up with lots of clay for your cash: Six weeks of classes, which include glazing and firing, cost $250, and it’s $20 for every 25 pounds of clay you carve up. The next cycle begins Monday 18. 233 W 19th St, between Seventh and Eighth Aves (212-243-2430, chelseaceramic.com)
La Mano Pottery
Manhandling mud can have a soothing effect on the soul, says Peggy Clarke, one of three owners. “It’s nice to be in a supportive environment that helps you to learn more and express yourself,” Clarke says. Summer courses, which run for eight weeks and cost $300, begin in June. 237 W 18th St between Seventh and Eighth Aves (212-627-9450, lamanopottery.com)
The Mudpit
Do you drink before getting behind the potter’s wheel—tea, that is? This Williamsburg ceramics studio has been slinging clay since 1999 and it’s the only local operation with a genuine raku kiln (employed in the ancient Japanese firing technique often used for tea-ceremony items). Summer sessions start June 1 and go for either six weeks ($225) or nine weeks ($320). 228 Manhattan Ave between Grand and Maujer Sts, Williamsburg, Brooklyn (718-218-9424, mudpitnyc.com)
MUGI Pottery
Wheel throwing? It’s a pottery class at this uptown studio, not a sport in the Highland games. Students of all skill levels are grouped into small classes, and inspiration is close at hand with work from potter Regina Wickham on display through Sunday 17. Summer classes start June 23 and run $199 for the six-week session. 993 Amsterdam Ave between 108th and 109th Sts (212-866-6202, mugipottery.com)
The Potter’s Wheel
Susan Sendek, instructor and owner, was a health-care professional for 30 years before buying this business ten years ago. Want to fake your firing prowess? Handmade vases, mugs, pitchers and more are on sale, while do-it-yourselfers can sign up for six-week summer sessions, priced at $270, begin June 15. 120-33 83rd Ave between Beverly Rd and Lefferts Blvd, Kew Gardens, Queens (718-441-6614, potterswheelny.com)

You asked for it: Art classes.
You missed another downtown Manhattan pottery studio. The Educational Alliance Art School has small but active studio, and probably the only place that offers free 'bench time'. (646-395-4235)
Also, Greenwich House in West Village offers classes.
You missed out the best kept secret in NYC ! I go to Choplet studio in Williamsburg and it's awesome! (238 Grand st, btw Driggs and Roebling, tel 917-547-8316) They have a nice garden and a great community of artists. Besides teaching wheel throwing, hand building, tile making and sculpture, they organize raku firing and mold making workshop. It's such a great atmosphere in the studio, I would recommend it to anyone, it's also more competitively priced than some of the places you have listed.
