I’d be interested in reading an article about dinner and dancing in New York City. I have been looking for a place other than the Rainbow Room that offers dinner and dancing (not clubbing) in NYC, and I haven’t been able to find anything.

To feel like you’re in a Coppola movie
Try Cotton Club (656 W 125th St between Broadway and Riverside Dr; 212-663-7980, cottonclub-newyork.com). This Harlem classic has been serving soul food with a side of jazz and swing since Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway were on the bandstand. On Monday nights the 13-piece swing band plays from 8:30pm until midnight for $15, and the 600-square-foot dance floor gives you plenty of room to work off the roast chicken and buffalo wings. From Thursday through Saturday the blues-and-jazz show is $45 per person, buffet included.
To scarf hummus while doing the Hustle
Check out Black Betty (366 Metropolitan Ave at Havermeyer St, Williamsburg, Brooklyn; 718-599-0243, blackbetty.net), where the daily happy hour features $3 Brooklyn Lager and $4 margaritas. In the evening, a different DJ or theme sets the tone each night, with live music on Wednesdays and Brazilian-themed Sundays.
To give yourself an excuse to get dressed up
Wait till April and hit up Tavern on the Green (Central Park West at W 67th St; 212-873-3200, tavernonthegreen.com), the epitome of romantic New York City clichés. Starting April 13, the gigantic Victorian Gothic hall has salsa dancing hosted by SouLatino every Monday, with other theme nights beginning after Memorial Day. Russki flavor takes over Saturday nights with DJs Pushkin and Versace and the occasional Russian-themed live musicians. It might be too warm for those giant fur hats, but you can’t go wrong with Tavern’s signature vodka cocktails.
To dance a little salsa with your salsa
Son Cubano (405 W 14th St between Ninth and Tenth Aves, 212-366-1640) serves Cuban classics and features live musicians every night till 10:30pm (when the DJs take over). The croquetas and cha-cha beats attract a robust crowd, so get there early to snag a table.
To carbo-load before you get down
The Upper East Side’s Baraonda (1439 Second Ave at 75th St; 212-288-8555, baraondany.com) is the place for northern Italian comfort food like clams in white wine and spaghetti and meatballs, but weekend nights expand beyond Ligurian flavors with Greek music and DJ Sia Bayiokos. If the crowd is too lively, Baraonda’s sister restaurant, Per Lei, is just down the street and has a similar youthful atmosphere.
To experience the original
If you’re dead-set on the revolving dance floor and classic big band of the Rainbow Room (30 Rockefeller Plaza between 49th and 50th Sts, 65th floor; 212-632-5100, rainbowroom.com), check the calendar for upcoming weekend dance dates—the next is March 14. It’s $200 per person for a three-course dinner, and no surprise, there’s a dress code. Quick, fetch the spats!
I'm with these other folks. I've been to Swing46 more times than I can count... great food, great music, dance lesson to get beginners started, conveniently located...it's great!
I live in San Francisco, and whenever I visit NY I always spend an evening at Swing 46. Ditto what other folks have said...if you like dancing, or just like to have a great meal while listening to wonderful big band music and watching the dancers, Swing 46 is the place!
What gives? You missed Swing46 in the theatre district. It has live music and dancing seven nights a week. It attracts tourists as well as many locals who go here regularly to get their dance fix.
For a special night, or an everyday night, dinner and dancing at Swing 46 can't be beat. Great food, great live music. A range of dancers from those who just took their first swing lesson to some of the accomplished dancers who've been kicking up their heels for years, there's room for everyone. Almost.
As the other have said... Swing 46 on Restaurant Row has served up great swing dancing music with dinner for ages. It's wonderful for those who are coming from the south end of town or Brooklyn. ALSO ommitted is Club Cache in the basement of Sophia's Restaurant on 46th St., just off Times Square with Vince Giordano and The Nighthawks nearly every Monday night. They really cook there with the most consistently traditional, fast, hot jass I've found in the city.
Hey Hey, You missed "Swing 46" in your article about dancing and dinner. George Gee and his band blow the brass every Monday. One of the best. Don't really see how you could have missed this one. You should give them their due and all of New York if you want to let people know the best places to hear great music. Best, Guy Traylor
As a regular dancer, I (like many others) am very surprised not to see Swing 46 listed here. I'm there every Tuesday; the music is fantastic (George Gee and the jump jivin wailers), the atmosphere is friendly, and there are always folks to dance with. It's a good time.
With dancing to live music 7 nights a week and good food, Swing 46 should have been your top listed venue in this story. Besides some of the all-star bands mentioned in other comments, Tom Abbott's Big Bang Band offers a young, fresh take to dancer-friendly jazz. A must visit.
Swing 46 is a great place to go dancing, especially if you like Big Band music. So is the gig at Sophia's with Vince Giordano. Both those venues should be added to this article!
Two omissions. For classic Rainbow Room feel of dancing to large bands - Swing46 on restaurant row has dinner & dancing 7 nights a week (http://www.swing46.com/ ), Mondays with the Harlem Renaissance Orchestra and most Tuesdays with the George Gee Big Bands. Sofia’s Restaurant/Club Cache at the Edison Hotel [221 West 46th Street (b/t Broadway & 8th Ave)] has Vince Giordano's excellent early hot-jazz band on Monday nights as well.
I totally agree with the above comment. I am a dancer and go there all the time. Swing46 is a rare venue that supports live swing band and dancing every night of the week. They feature some of the best big bands in NYC!!! There is usually a free swing dance lesson between the sets.
HUH? I'm a hard core dancer, and can't believe this list doesn't have at the top SWING 46 (46th Street betw 8th & 9th)... 7 nights a week this theater district supperclub is AIMED at dancing, with live music nightly (especially great on Mon for Harlem Renaissance Orchestra and George Gee on Tues)...the dancefloor is excellent...(the food is quite good, but dining and drinking are optional, making it a flexible space for dates, or regulars) cover only $12 and very reasonable in all regards..
