Skip the Ricky’s madness by hitting up Score of Doom: A Costume Swap at Trophy Bar (351 Broadway between Rodney and Keap Sts, Williamsburg, Brooklyn; scoredatscore.com; Sat 24 2–6pm, $5; R.S.V.P. required). Sip on a “Cocktail of Doom” drink special ($5–$6) and bring a gently used clothing or accessories item to trade for new duds.
Laugh yourself silly at the Shells Halloween Costume Party at Joe’s Pub (425 Lafayette St between Astor Pl and E 4th St; 212-539-8777, joespub.com; Sun 25 at 9:30pm, $15). As Roslyn Hart, who plays Shells, puts it, “Where else can you bob for apples, wear a fabulous costume and watch a Carrie Bradshaw wanna-be ruin her life, one drunk dial at a time?” Arrive early for the preshow costume contest.
You might have a paranormal experience at the always-spooky Merchant’s House Museum’s From Parlor to Grave: 1865 Funeral Reenactment (29 E 4th St between Bowery and Lafayette St; 212-777-1089, merchantshouse.org; Sun 25 3–5pm; $10–$15). Guests should wear 19th-century mourning attire for a re-creation of Seabury Treadwell’s funeral (he was the house’s first owner).
Whip out a mod costume for Sugar Shack Burlesque’s Something Wicked This Way Comes: A Pre-Halloween Go-Go Getdown at Public Assembly (70 North 6th St between Kent and Wythe Aves, Williamsburg, Brooklyn; 718-384-4586, publicassemblynyc.com; Mon 26 at 10pm, $10). Have a positively sinful evening at Puppet Playlist No. 4: The Seven Deadly Sins at the Tank (354 45th St between Eighth and Ninth Aves; 212-563-6269, thetanknyc.org; Wed 28 at 7:30, 9:30pm; $7; R.S.V.P. at puppetplaylist.com). Each puppeteer and musician will create a new, original piece based on one of the seven deadly sins. Lusty, greedy puppets? We’re there! (This will sell out, so get tickets now!)
Dances of Vice: An Edward Gorey Halloween at the 303 Bond Street Theatre (303 Bond St at Union St, Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn; 718-708-3203, dancesofvice.com; Oct 31 at 9pm, $20) will have a murder-mystery vibe based on Gorey’s 1982 book, The Dwindling Party. Expect ornate, vintage-inspired costumes (no casual attire is admitted, so get started on yours now!), and live music from the 24-piece chamber rock outfit This Ambitious Orchestra. Advance tickets are not available, so arrive early—the DOV crew anticipates a sold-out show.
The NYC Witches’ Masquerade Ball at the Delancey (168 Delancey St between Attorney and Clinton Sts; 212-254-9920, charmedbystarr.com; Oct 31 at 8pm, $25–$30) includes a Samhain ritual, which involves the lifting of the veil and a spiral dance of souls. “We do it to welcome and say goodbye to the dead,” says Starr (of Charmed by Starr, one of the fest’s organizers). We’re sure that the ancestral drunk circle helps with that process.
