How would you describe Dickson Hairshop?
This is a relaxed environment, we have fun. The client should too.
What’s your background?
I moved here four years ago from L.A. and was having trouble finding work in my field—welding. So I enrolled in a training program at Paul Mitchell; I thought it was a great program and something I’d be good at, so I just jumped into it. I excelled pretty quickly and really enjoyed it. I’m largely self-taught, though. I always did hair for fun, ever since eighth grade. It just comes kind of naturally and I love it. It’s creative and a great way to make people feel great.
How would you describe your style?
I prefer fun, easy-to-style hair. All of my haircuts are tailored to the person’s needs and lifestyle.
What inspires you?
For inspiration I look to young kids, hip-hop culture, and classic ’40s and ’50s fashion.
What styles should remain dead and buried?
Long layers and brown hair with blond highlights. Branch out!
When it comes to annoying things that clients do, what’s the worst transgression?
Showing up late or canceling five minutes before an appointment.
You just went platinum blond—who does your hair?
I style it and have some help from coworkers.
