Red Market
While working during the day for Frédéric Fekkai, stylists David Cotteblanche and Reynald Ricard started taking on their own clients in the evening at Cotteblanche’s studio apartment. They realized there was a demand for a late-night salon and opened a small space in 2004, before expanding to the current Meatpacking location in June 2005. This after-hours hair haven is as much a hip hangout as it is a haircuttery. Clients can stop in as late as 10pm for cuts (starting at $75), color ($100 for a single processing) and conditioning ($50 to $150), donning a stylish denim robe and enjoying complimentary wine and champagne. The spacious, sleek and modern loft looks like any other swanky salon, but its attitude suggests otherwise: A cut or color is the same price, whether it’s with one of the owners or a stylist. 32 Gansevoort St between Greenwich and Hudson Sts, fourth floor (212-929-9600, redmarketnyc.com)
Robert G Salon
A welcoming space decorated with wood accents and a bounty of plants, Robert G Salon is a friendly neighborhood boutique that offers complimentary cookies, wine and even treats for dogs. Stop by for a cut (from $80 for men, from $100 for women) or a blowout (from $50), or repair your dry strands with the Aveda deep-conditioning treatment ($50). Spa services such as facials and massages are also available for those looking for a full-day beauty bonanza. 23 Commerce St between Bedford and Bleecker Sts (212-488-3200)
Mario Diab Salon
Whoever said you can’t mix business with pleasure obviously hasn’t been to this Soho emporium. Complete with private rooms, tables and Internet access, Mario Diab Salon targets cubicle dwellers by allowing clients to hold meetings while having their hair done. If you skipped out during your lunch break to get beautified, the salon allows delivery from nearby bistro Balthazar. Try the salon’s Curly Cut (from $135), the luxurious Leonor Greyl conditioning treatment (from $65) or a blowout ($45) while closing a deal. 62 Crosby St between Broome and Spring Sts (212-226-6595, mariodiab.com)
Birds & Fellas
This East Village unisex salon is all about convenience and customer service. Returning patrons simply need to touch their fingerprint to a computer in order to be handed their preferred cocktail (complimentary, of course) and reading material (your fingerprint unlocks a personal profile). The beverage menu is broken down seasonally: Spring offers customers riesling, sake or mini martinis; autumn brings individually brewed hot chocolate or syrah; and gourmet teas, coffee, Evian, Diet Coke or Orangina are offered year-round. Are you always forgetting when your last haircut was? The salon can text or e-mail you a reminder when you’re due for another cut, color or touch-up, along with available appointment dates. And after two (relatively cheap) snips (cuts start at $49), you get your third one free. Plus, once you fall in love with the salon and start telling all your friends, you’re gifted a shiny new iPod shuffle for referring five friends (after their third appointment)! 514 E 6th St between Aves A and B (212-533-1592, birdsandfellas.com)
At Salon and Beyond
Step into the ground floor of At Salon and Beyond’s brownstone building and you’ll think you mistakenly walked into a middle-school bake sale—on offer is an assortment of complimentary baklava, chocolate, muffins and soft drinks. Bored with stuffing your face? Feel free to use one of the three computers in the waiting room to tweet to your heart’s content or snipe that pair of boots you’ve been watching on eBay. Once your stylist or technician is ready for you, you’ll be led into one of the salon’s three sections, depending on your beauty needs—hair, nails or skin care. When in a hurry, enjoy the popular 30-minute minifacial ($60) using exclusive French Yonka products, or a quick hair gloss—coloring treatment for a burst of shine ($60). In case you still need more incentive to visit, customers can take 20 percent off any service on their first visit. 104 W 71st St at Columbus Ave (212-579-5868, atsalon.com)
