Tommy Guns
More saloon than salon, this Lower East Side hair-care boutique is like a Clint Eastwood movie set come to life. Mosey on down for a cut ($90 for women, $75 for men), blowout ($60) or coloring (starting at $90) and you’ll lounge in an old-fashioned black leather chair with silver metal accents. Shampoos, creams and gels line the glass shelves like whiskey and gin waiting to quench style-hungry patrons’ cravings. 138 Ludlow St between Rivington and Stanton Sts (212-477-1151, tommygunsny.com)
Blackstones
Scissors, curling irons and razors are more than just styling tools here. Thanks to the artful eye of interior designer and architect Mark Dizon, these old, rusty items have been turned into an arsenal of art. (Don’t worry, only the ones on display are old and rusty! Actual tools are brand-spanking-new.) “Owner Joey Silvestra inspired the look,” explains Dizon. “He’s an eclectic guy who collects unusual things—and was once a taxidermist. This is his curiosity cabinet.” Curious? Check out his cabinet and stop by for a cut (starts at $75) or coloring ($90 for single processing). 19 E 7th St between Second and Third Aves (212-353-2680, blackstonesnyc.net)
Ryan Darius Salon
With the help of rich gold-colored foil ceilings, ornate furniture and elaborate mirrors, hairstylist and handyman Ryan Nicklaus somehow managed to turn an old pizza shop into this fabulous 450-square-foot beauty parlor. He works side-by-side with one other stylist, Rosemary Djuravcevic, and offers haircuts ($125), blowouts ($95), colorings ($125) and more. If he can transform an old building, imagine what he can do to your hair. 82 W 12th St between Fifth and Sixth Aves (212-255-3579, ryandariussalon.com)
Michael Angelo’s Wonderland Beauty Parlor
Part salon, part boutique, this Meatpacking space is an emporium for the eyes. There’s the neon pink WONDERLAND sign, the cushioned reception desk, the floating mermaid Barbies by the shampoo bowls, the clear plastic lawn chairs at the cutting stations, scratch-and-sniff wallpaper (try the cocktail wall for a citrus burst!), hanging shimmery paper and who knows what else. Cuts range from $99 to $250 and are accompanied by their signature pink lemonade and an offer to rock out with an iPod Nano. Also try the Brazilian blowout ($350), which uses mild chemicals to cut down on frizz with results lasting up to four months. On your way out, stop by the shop, which is stocked with anything and everything that Michael finds in his travels. Items here range from $3 to $1,500. 418 W 13th St between Ninth Ave and Washington St (212-524-2800, wonderlandbeautyparlor.com)
