Where do you get your hair cut?
At Hair Kuwayama (406 E 13th St between First Ave and Ave A; 212-529-6977, hairkuwayama.com), that Japanese place. I’ve been going there four years, most recently to a girl named Hiromi. She can create anything I ask her to.
How would you describe your style?
A lot of old ’40s and ’50s vintage and rockabilly.
So this isn’t a costume—you dress like this every day?
Yep, every day.
How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning?
A half hour to 45 minutes.
Do you have any favorite vintage shops for great hats or hairpieces?
I love Family Jewels Vintage Clothing (130 W 23rd St between Sixth and Seventh Aves; 212-633-6020, familyjewelsnyc.com) and Rue St. Denis Vintage Clothing (170 Ave B between 10th and 11th Sts; 212-260-3388, vintagenyc.com). I also go to Etsy and eBay and search really common stuff.
Do you have any favorite products?
Biolage mousse is the best. It’s great for creating sponge curls and pin curls.
Did you teach yourself how to do all these old hairstyles?
Yes. I also have some really great old hair instruction manuals.
Do you ever just wake up in the morning and say fuck it?
Well, my fuck-it hair is usually a faux roll, thrown on with a bandanna. I still probably do more on my bad-hair days than other people do on their best days.

how bout some real new yorkers? please? go to the bronx and photograph some people. stop being scared
BTW, the pics get REALLY horrible starting from slide #69!!! Stop at 1-68. They are fine.
Okay, so great job on the hair. It USED to suck but the updated hair styles are much, much better and en vogue. Props to the new writer/reporter/photographers!
umm these hair styles suck... can we please be a little less hipster and a little more original tony?
Wow...all I have to say is wth? A few of the hairstyles are good but majority of these really suck. I can't say I can completely agree with "A" but you really should have expanded to more areas. This is pretty sad if this is supposed to be a representation of NYC.
Are you insane? This is the best you can come up with in NYC?? Dirty Hair, basic cuts, mullets? ewww. Of course must of those were in Union Square where all the people think are individuals when in fact they are all drones. All trying to be cool, when you really are not. Time Out I expected more, I love your stuff but this was no good. there were maybe two or three cool cuts but really??
I love Marisa's extentions....so natural.

Topher is great! He cut my hair before my wedding and I got a million compliments fro all my friends and family. I've been going to him for years, he's fantastic and an absolute sweetheart!!
I also go to Topher at Arrojo - he's amazing! Strongly recommend him for a fun, precise cut!
I also go to Topher at Arrojo - he is fantastic! Got my haircut by him for my elopement and I looked wonderful! Topher is willing to work with your initial idea, making a cut that fits just perfectly, yet he doesn't try to push you into anything. Go glad he is finally getting the props that he deserves!
I go to Topher for all my cuts. No matter what I am envisioning in my mind, Topher manages to bring it to life and then some. I get compliments on his cuts all the time. Plus, he is possibly the sweetest guy you'll ever meet. I recommend him to everyone i know!
