What it is
Guy is a trumpeter; Madeline is a waitress. They break up and try to forget each other, though fate has other plans—including impromptu song-and-dance numbers and some of the most swoonworthy romantic interludes ever captured in 16mm black and white.

Why we’re psyched
Critics have praised Damien Chazelle’s debut as a brilliant combo of Cassavetes grit and the Comden-Green musicals of the ’50s; we’ll add that his Beantown-to-Gotham version of A Woman Is a Woman is the don’t-miss movie of this year’s fest.
