E is for Ebert
Not every story involving a critic had a tragic ending. Since 2006, the Chicago Sun-Times’ Roger Ebert had been on an extended sabbatical from writing due to health problems; for those of us who grew up watching him on his weekly TV shows and regularly read his work online, the absence was keenly felt. Then, on April 1st , 2008, the venerable journalist returned to his weekly reviewing duties, dispensing opinions with the same authority he’d always commanded. Given that he hadn’t appeared on his syndicated show for years, it wasn’t surprising to hear that At the Movies was officially moving in a new direction. (A small price to pay for not having to put up with the odious Richard Roeper.) Still, thumbs be damned, Roger Ebert was meant to be read. It’s nice to have him back.
