D is for dysfunctional superheroes
Remember when superheroes were uncomplicated creatures, duking it out with megalomaniac villains in the name of truth, justice, etc.? These days, if you’re wearing a cape and fighting crime, chances are good that you’re also in desperate need of therapy. The 2008 crop of superheroes suffered from alcoholism (Iron Man, Hancock), schizophrenia combined with anger issues (The Incredible Hulk), chronic depression (Hellboy II: The Golden Army) and your run-of-the-mill borderline-personality disorder with a dab of psychosis (The Dark Knight). And these were the good guys.
