The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964)
Deneuve, in her first collaboration with Jacques Demy—which made her an international star and—says good-bye to Nino Castelnuovo, who’s being shipped off to fight in Algeria. Every word in the film is sung, though Deneuve’s voice was dubbed. Your tears, however, will be the real thing.
Repulsion (1965)
Ever the glacial beauty even when schizoid, Deneuve loses her mind in a claustrophobic London flat. Roman Polanski directs the actor in her first English-language role.
The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967)
In one of the most exuberant musicals ever made—Deneuve’s second with Demy—the actor costars with her real-life sister Françoise Dorléac, who died shortly after the film’s release. Here they sing “The Song of the Twins.” Dig those wigs!
Belle de jour (1967)
Resplendent in Yves St. Laurent finery, Deneuve, playing a bored, frigid bourgeois wife, decides to give the world’s oldest profession a try in her first of two films with Luis Buñuel.
