The job Position in TV news
The status: In order to remain relevant in the wireless Wikiworld, news stations have had to diversify across multiple platforms—which is fancy language for offering news in a number of different formats, to keep up with technology. This translates into increased job opportunity. “Sectors of jobs in TV are booming right now because TV is just so different than it was,” says Tom Farkas, director of programming and special events for NY1. “When we put something on TV, we have to also put it on the Web, and there has to be a video-on-demand component. We’re competing with phone companies!”
The game plan: Pick your media company and then apply through the company’s website, playing up any tech skills you’ve got. Despite the voice in your head telling you that you’re sending your résumé into the ether, Farkas says the majority of NY1 hires come through parent company Time Warner’s job site, which also services CW11 and HBO, among others.
The hookup: Or, you know, skip that website business entirely and meet Farkas—thanks to us. To score a one-on-one meeting, send your résumé to timeoutnewyork.com/jobhookup. But bone up on current events—all potential NY1ers are given a Jeopardy!-tough news quiz.—Alison Rosen
