The job Actor

The status: The scene’s changed since the days of the original A Chorus Line, but the pressure hasn’t. “There’s more product than there are places to put it in,” says casting director Benard Telsey, of Telsey + Company, who cast Grey Gardens and Across the Universe. “It doesn’t mean it’s easier to break in,” Telsey continues. “Just more out there.”

The game plan: At Backstage.com, you’ll find 4,000 jobs listed per year, but landing one is another story. Telsey advises you to start with the résumé. “Think of it as a bio,” he says. “I’m looking for something that makes me want to know more.” Once you’re in, sell yourself. “I’m looking for people who have a point of view about life,” says David Binder, producer of Legally Blonde. “Also, they should have a strong sense of the project. We’re producing the new De La Guarda show, Fuerzabruta, and the people who impressed us were the ones who researched the show. Simple.”
