A Take the 1 train to the 242nd St stop, and then enter Van Cortlandt Park—the sprawling flat terrain makes for the perfect start to a journey through the borough. Just north of the tennis courts, you’ll see a paved path heading east toward the lake. Bear right via the water and enjoy the tranquil view. Continue south on the path when the lake’s contour bends in a northward direction.
B Exiting the park, head left on Van Cortlandt Park South and then turn right onto Mosholu Parkway South. Along the tree-lined parkway, you’ll pass DeWitt Clinton High School, which was founded in 1897 and whose alums include novelist James Baldwin and 30 Rock’s Tracy Morgan.
C Continue through Bedford Park—a peaceful, shaded Bronx nabe—and then turn left on Kazimiroff Boulevard to Bronx Park East. Veer right into the park; ride through it and exit onto Pelham Parkway North.
D Pedal toward the elevated train station on the parkway. Continue on through the expansive, burb-like Pelham Parkway. Keep an eye out for Stillwell Avenue, as it’s the end of the northern bike path. Cross over to the southern path on the parkway by Stillwell—otherwise, you’ll be short on options farther down when the parkway widens into a highway. Make your way over the thruway (a.k.a. the unmarked City Island Road) toward City Island, the Bronx’s answer to a New England fishing town.
E Once on the isle, veer into its small promenade for a break—hydrate as you take in the waterfront view. Head up City Island Avenue, the main drag, to explore. City Island is known for its delicious seafood—we recommend retro cafeteria Johnny’s (2 City Island Ave, 718-885-2086) at the end of the road. For dessert, stop for some ice cream at Lickety Split (295 City Island Ave between Hawkins and Fordham Sts, 718-885-9654) as you make your way back to the mainland.
F Head back in the reverse direction until just after crossing the bridge. Bear left on Shore Road all the way to the footbridge that connects to the Pelham Bay Park 6 train station. Finally, take a moment to bask in the buzz of your ride across the Boogie Down, as you wait for the 6 to take you home.
