Breathe: Peaceful spots where you can clear your head
Carl Schurz Park Small Dog Run
This riverside runway is built at pup’s-eye level; between the tiny dogs and the tiny children loving the tiny dogs, even Scrooge McDuck would bust a grin. East End Ave at 86th St (carlschurzparknyc.org)
Alice’s Tea Cup
Settle in by the upstairs window at Alice’s East 64th Street location and peek out on a soon-to-be-leafy block. A huge pot of tea and two giant scones is just $10. Ahhh… 156 E 64th St between Lexington and Third Aves (212-486-9200, alicesteacup.com)
Coney Island
As the subway from midtown slowly empties out on your freedom ride to airy, salty and somewhat-still-freak-filled Coney, your head follows suit. Enjoy it before the summer crowds swarm in and redevelopment makes it unrecognizable. If your belly’s as empty as your head, make a pit stop at Nathan’s. Subway: D, F, N, Q to Coney Island–Stillwell Ave
Garden at the Church of St. Luke’s in the Field
Bryant Park’s pretty lawn has its charm, but for more seclusion, plant yourself on a wooden bench in this tiny walled wonderland, where the tree-filled nooks make you feel like you’re far from the West Village crowds. 487 Hudson St between Christopher and Grove Sts (212-924-0562, stlukeinthefields.org)—Erin McHugh
