The way to behave
Learn the basics of spa culture, from what to tip to keeping your panties on
- Try to show up 15 minutes before your appointment—earlier if there are steam or sauna facilities available. If you’re rushing around until the last minute, it’ll be harder to unwind once you get there.
- Turn off your cell phone when you arrive. The ringing menace will hinder your chances of having a soothing session and make you persona non grata throughout the facility.
- Once you’re past the front desk, whisper. Spas are quiet places, and any high-volume conversation is an immediate ambiance killer.
- To nude or not to nude: When in doubt, ask. This is especially important for bikini waxes—many of which can be conducted without it all hanging out. Some spas offer disposable underwear and even bathing suits for underwater services.
- Tipping in spas is the same as tipping at a restaurant: 15 to 20 percent on the treatment total is the norm. If you’ve had a truly amazing experience, throw in a few dollars more. As in hair salons, it’s customary to reward owners with a little less.
- Don’t suffer in silence. Spa employees want your experience to be as positive as possible, so communicate your likes and dislikes and speak up about past injuries, pressure tolerance, sensitive skin and the like.
- Leave the rocks at home. Though some facilities have secure lockers, most do not. No one wants to be worrying about Grandma’s emerald cut while trying to achieve therapeutic bliss.—Lynn DeFelice
