➜ When hanging out in the nabe, resident Juan Carlos Toban reads and people-watches in Woodside Memorial Plaza (60th St between Roosevelt and Woodside Aves, Woodside, Queens), a triangular island underneath the elevated 7 train where locals sit and chat. “On one bench you hear one language, on the next bench another,” Toban says.
➜ For food, Toban heads to Peruvian-Chinese joint Peking (58-11 Woodside Ave between 58th and 59th Sts, 718-672-1414), where he opts for a plate of chicken with rice and beans. “The loma saltado is also very good,” he says.
➜ For residents like Josephine Bourke, general store Han Ah Reum (59-18 Woodside Ave between 59th and 60th Sts, 718-446-0759) is the place to get Asian snacks and fresh meat. Tourists like it too. Randomly, a passing visitor from Ireland recommends the curry, as well as the chance to watch tofu being hand-made in the store.
➜ For a drink, Bourke picks Charlie’s (44-08 60th St between Queens Blvd and 44th Ave, 718-429-8502). “It’s great,” she says. “I love the atmosphere, and occasionally there’s live music.”
