Landmark achievement: The gritty wails of this NOLA sax legend bridge the gap between his hometown’s jazz heritage and the post-Coltrane avant-garde. While Jordan has played alongside some giants of jazz, pop and R&B, his tireless work as an educator (with next-generation stars like Terence Blanchard and Wynton and Branford Marsalis, as well as with children) may be his more important legacy.

Why see him now: Jordan has long been a hometown legend, but in the past decade, he’s become a star on the international free-jazz scene. Still, the 73-year-old remains modest. “I guess I’m just an ordinary kind of dude,” Jordan says with a chuckle. “I tell people, if you want to hear me play, come listen to me practice in my kitchen when I’m really burnin’.”
