Landmark achievement: Since 1978’s monster hit “Rock Lobster,” the band has maintained a perfect balance between gleeful eccentricity and party-ready accessibility. The B-52’s keep reminding us that rock can be an accepting haven where freaks and geeks thumb their noses at convention—and they do it with great style.

Why see them now: As proved by their new album, Funplex, the B-52’s still outpop 99 percent of current bands. “No one writes collectively like we do, and we still have our sense of the absurd and humor intact,” singer Fred Schneider explains. Fellow vocalist Kate Pierson reveals other secrets of their touring longevity: “Our rider includes goat’s-milk yogurt, fruit, raw veggies and an array of ‘healthy’ junk food. My holistic doctor sends me herbal tonics to keep my endurance high!”

“I don’t know if it was fashion-forward or fashion-backward, but I definitely dug the look of Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson. I wanted to be both of them. By junior high school, I had a long black skirt and white pleather boots. It was kinda weird, I guess, but my friends thought I looked awesome.”

“As I got out of elementary school, I had a little singing group called the Boppers. One time we did ‘Love Shack’ and charged people a penny to watch us sing. I couldn’t wait to do Cindy’s ‘tin roof…rusted’ part at the end. We made 35¢, so I guess I owe the group some money if I ever meet them.”
