With the Haden Family Singers, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Damrosch Park; August 24 FREELandmark achievement: Haden started his career singing country music in a family band on the radio and at the Grand Ole Opry, but by his midtwenties he was making history as the bassist in jazz innovator Ornette Coleman’s groundbreaking quartet. Haden’s subsequent work has been as varied as it is high caliber, from the dreamy, film-noir bebop of Quartet West to the Latin-jazz-based arrangements for his socially themed Liberation Music Orchestra and Land of the Sun Quintet.
Why see him now: Quartet West and the Haden Family Singers are prime examples of the versatility that has been one of Haden’s hallmarks for decades. “It’s as easy to appreciate the beauty in different types of music as it is to admire the differences in flowers,” he says. “If I feel close to a style, I can play it.”
