The Feelies
Maxwell’s. July 1, 2; sold out.
Battery Park. July 4; free, tickets required (rivertorivernyc.com).
Landmark achievement: The North Jersey band drew on the Velvet Underground years before the influence became de rigueur, creating wired, bookish indie rock at a time when the Vampire Weekend kids were but twinkles in their parents’ eyes.
Why see them now: Simply put: “We’re reuniting because we like playing together, value the sound we make together and enjoy hanging out with each other,” singer-guitarist Glenn Mercer says. Mercer has sprinkled his recent solo gigs with a few Feelies gems, but for fans who came of rock & roll age after the musicians split up in 1992, the shows offer an opportunity to really hear these outstanding songs live—either at the band’s old Hoboken stomping ground Maxwell’s or at Battery Park, where the Feelies open for another veteran band of which you might have heard, Sonic Youth.
