Death Vessel + Mike Wexler
Brooklyn Next 2008. The angelic croon of Death Vessel’s Joel Thibodeau beautifully illuminates his dark songs, almost Gothic in their strident beauty. Close your eyes and you won’t believe the sound of Thibodeau’s voice. Over the past few years, singer-songwriter Mike Wexler has held local club crowds rapt with little more than his idiosyncratic voice, with a sandy texture so fine it seems almost liquid. Early on, because of the pronounced way Wexler draws out the ends of lines, it also sounded affected. But with Sun Wheel, his debut album, the fixes appear to have been simple: Just tamp down the vocals a bit and come up with appropriate environments—smoky and dramatic yet spare—for his songs.
