Living in NYC doesn't have to be expensive. Other than the rent I pay on my nice apartment ($800/month) I really don't spend money on much...I cook cheap tasty meals at home and drink in dive bars (my favorite kind). Occasionally I'll go on a $50 shopping spree at thrift stores and buy a new wardrobe. I can live quite happily on $1500/month.
