“[Men who chase shopgirls] are sometimes funny, usually creepy and a little scary. But it’s generally harmless and gives us something to talk about.”
Where to find ’em…
Where they work—duh Yeah, it’s that easy. Chris Pasquet, a shopgirl at Bird in Park Slope, says you’ll have the most luck scoring while the girls are on duty. “This guy came in and tried on shirts—super fumbly and adorable—left, came back and bought the shirt,” she says. “Then an hour later, he e-mailed the store asking for a date with ‘the girl with red hair.’?” It worked and they went out. Since shopgirls have to be well dressed (often in the clothes they’re selling), Pasquet recommends looking sharp yourself—“don’t come in wearing sweatpants.”
Babycakes Shopgirls like sweets—particularly ones that are less fattening. “You especially notice them coming in on weekends,” says one Babycakes counterperson. To date, he’s spied cuties from both Earnest Sewn and Moo Shoes ordering cupcakes. 248 Broome St between Ludlow and Orchard Sts (212-677-5047, babycakesnyc.com)
Great Lakes Pasquet says that she and her fellow shopgirls like to head to dive bars after work. “Once this really creepy dude was trying to pick up one of my coworkers, and then this super nice guy stepped in and pretended that he knew her,” she says. Good thinking: This valiant gesture landed him a date. 284 Fifth Ave at 1st St, Park Slope, Brooklyn (718-499-3710)
