This long-awaited project from the mop-headed wordsmith is an exercise in stylized simplicity. Martin stands on a spartan stage in a T-shirt and jeans. Each episode explores one concept—timing, for example, or power—through his trademark pithy jokes, stick drawings, acoustic-music-backed musings and the occasional sketch. The format works, establishing a direct route between his ideas and the audience. Because of that, some of the sketches, which are by nature loud and muddy, fall out of sync with the other material. Others, like the hilarious parking-spot tussle with Jon Benjamin, give his jokes wings.
