Location TBA; Fri 6
Is it our imagination, or has there been a sharp rise in the number of “location TBA” dance parties in the five boroughs lately? Whatever the case, it’s fine by us: Such events often end up being held in some raw, out-of-the-way warehouse— or, alternately, some colossal loft space with an understanding owner. (Either way, it can often beat hanging out in an actual club, don’t you think?) Many of the best secret-location throwdowns have been techno-oriented ones, with Blkmarket Membership’s Taimur and Fahad helping to lead the way. And this week’s Blkmarket bash looks to be a hot one.
Most of the attention will be centered on the headliner, Sasha, and there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be. When the U.K. vet entered the ranks of international-superstar DJs in the early ’90s (largely through his association with the U.K.’s Renaissance shindigs, and later the Renaissance mix-CDs) , the Welshman’s progressive-leaning sound was sometimes derided by the underground-techno world as too flowery, too soft and—perhaps most importantly—too popular to be taken seriously. Yet, with only minor tweaks to his music over the years, Sasha is now greeted with open arms. Weird—but good-weird, we think.
We also think you should get to the shindig in plenty of time for DJ Three’s set. A frequent opener for Sasha, the boss of the Hallucination Limited is considered something of a DJ’s DJ, mixing deep, impassioned electronic-house with a precision that other spinners would kill for—and that you will dance to.—Bruce Tantum
