12-Turn-13; Sat 27
In the past few years, clubland’s collective unconscious—at least, the part concerned with beats that go boom-boom-boom—has come to two important understandings. One: House and techno are the same thing, or at the very least, they’re Venn-diagram circles with a very high degree of overlap. Two: Music with a bit of emotional heft is nothing to be scared of. Of course, both of those realizations were felt overseas long before they were here at home, with is why overlooked guys like Patrice Scott and Keith Worthy—a pair of Motor City stalwarts who’ve been toiling in the deep-house/Detroit-techno nexus for years—have, as of late, been spinning to crowds of thousands at European festivals. Here in NYC, Worthy has played at Deep See (a fine party, but definitely on the intimate end of things), while Scott has never played a Gotham set.
Those are oversights of near-criminal proportions, considering that both men have long been considered among Detroit’s best jocks. But Saturday 27’s House-n-Home hoedown, featuring resident spinners Anthony Parasole (from the Deconstruct label) and DJ Spinoza (of the Bunker) and held at Brooklyn’s 12-Turn-13, will expunge that crime from the city’s record, as both Worthy and Scott will be on hand to show us New Yorkers how this deep-tech thing really works. It’s a perfect party for them to do so—neither a shiny, overpriced superclub nor a cramped hole-in-the-wall, House-n-Home is a straight-up loft jam, with plenty of room and the proper vibe for dancing. And you will be dancing.—Bruce Tantum
