Reggae is one of the music world’s most beloved genres, but it’s never seemed to have the same presence in the city’s nightlife that other sounds (hip-hop and house, for two) enjoy. Maybe that has to do with the weather or lack of outdoor amenities—it seems to us reggae sounds best when heard under a hot, baking sun. Or perhaps it’s the shortage of good weed. But it’s not like there aren’t any reggae parties to be had in NYC. For instance, there’s the Redbud Recordings DubTempo affair in Park Slope lounge the Royale, featuring selectors Chicus, Amon, Jennifly Green, Greg Caz and DJ Sabo on Friday 5. As a little warm-up, here’s a mix from the label’s Chicus. Extra points for the inclusion of Frankie Paul’s “Head to Toe,” which quotes from both Lisa Lisa and “Double Dutch Bus.”
