Sullivan Room; Sat 18
Sullivan Room, the unpretentious, reliably busy club that sits like a dance-music oasis in the otherwise barren NYU neighborhood, is usually thought of as a haven for house music. In truth, that's not strictly the case. Some of drum 'n' bass's biggest names, including Goldie and LTJ Bukem, have rinsed it out on the decks. The boîte has hosted plenty of techno nights (remember Tronic Treatment?), with the likes of Kevin Saunderson and Stacey Pullen gracing the wheels of steel. It's been one of the few spots in the city to toss breaks nights, featuring big names such as Rennie Pilgrem and Überzone. From Latin and Brazilian to trance and even goth—name a genre, and somebody here has played it.
But it's undeniably house that's allowed Sullivan Room to reach the age of seven, which in club years is somewhere just short of infinity. A lot of that credit goes to Sleepy & Boo; the pair's jacking Basic NYC affairs have attracted major leaguers like Derrick Carter, Satoshi Tomiie, DJ Dan and Mark Farina, all spinners more accustomed to playing in the world's superclubs than at a midsize room like SR. (That's not to slight the Libation and Funkbox parties, both catering to the soulful-house heads.) The anniversary party boasts an appearance from the ever-popular Scumfrog, which makes sense—he's a guy who's probably stood astride the club's booth as often as anyone, and his buzzy, pumping, four-to-the-floor sound is one that helped make the club one of the city's best.—Bruce Tantum
